opening word processor files (OOo) from the desktop

Ever since I upgraded to 9.04, I've had some strange behavior when I try to
open Open Office word processing files from my desktop.

If I "double click" on the file's icon, I get a browser window with all of
the various files (mostly XML) associated with the file instead of the file
opening within OOo. If I "right-click" on the file, I have the option of
opening it with Open Office by going to "other application". I've looked at
the file associations, and .odt files are affiliated with OOo.

I know it's picky, but I really am hooked on the "double-click" habit -- I'd
like to be able to have that option again.

regards

mcm
