What does it take for any Operating System to be declared by a vendor
as supporting Operating System?

When ever I purchase some Hardware or Software I do mention to get
Linux Support, but no one till date was able to deliver or to support
this requirement. Latest is "Ansys" package: http://www.ansys.com/

They supplied CDs which do mention a large number of supported
operating system, including Linux, but not Ubuntu, they mention only
limited "certified Linux" like Redhat 3.0, SuSE ES9, SGI ALTIX ProPack
3.0.

I suspect I will not be able to run it on Ubuntu, and company is not
going it support my effort.

More concerning issue is that , their many product supporting only MS
windows and a a few Linux and Solaris.
http://www.ansys.com/services/ss-platform-table.asp

Still more alarming, they support Linux and Solars for current release
and will not support for future release under legend "yes (Final)" as
per http://www.ansoft.com/products/supported-operating-systems.cfm ,
and in future they are going to support MS server 2008.

Is it not strange, where trend is platform independent, and this
company is moving away from it? or does it really huge effort to
support all platforms? If yes, then software like Openoffice are
GREAT!!!
