    Tell us which version of Ubuntu you have. It sounds like your video 
driver might be one Ubuntu can't support. Since your DVD is fine can you 
use it to boot up on another computer and see if it looks better? Like 
all Ubuntu Live-CD's you can see if it will load without changing the 
hard drive at all :-)
