Evolution - no alarms?

I think you meant gconf-editor.

But the clue was good! That box was indeed unticked.

What I get is a little clock icon in the top panel, with a red
exclamation mark, plus the appointment appears briefly in a balloon at
bottom right. I don't get the full snooze/dismiss dialogue unless I
click on the clock icon. And at least once, the notify app died after
notifying me.
