wicd doesn't work

I tried wicd and for me it works as well as networkmanager. But it works 
different because it connects to the network even if there is no user 
logged in. Networkmanager only connects after a user is logged in. You 
may prefer one version or the other.

If you have wicd installed and want your networkmanager back you can 
simply install networkmanager. It will then remove wicd.
