Some things to try:
ifconfig            shows network settings
ifconfig eth0     shows settings for first ether
man ifconfig     find out how to change them

ping     just sends a packet to test
Use ping -c 3  or some such to limit repetitions

ping 127.0.0.1             see if there's a network at all
ping www.google.com  test DNS && connection
