I would first look at hosted solutions. These are of course completely
platform neutral, and have the added benefit of being able to work
from home, or while traveling with no extra cost (or with a
Blackberry). There is some really cool stuff going on with salesforce
and basecamp, and probably others. Desktop centric applications are on
life support.
