fsck/e2fsck fails on a usb drive

I have a usb hard drive 320Gb
both fsck or e2fsck both go into waiting state "sync_page" and never do any more, unless i unplug the usb drive
I have fsck it on my ubuntu 7.10 live CD on my desktop computer

Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments.
but instead use OpenDocument File Formats or 
use OpenOffice
