Distributed System with Ubuntu

Hello,

I would like to develop some distributed systems applications but at home, I
have only one machine
running ubuntu.

Has anybody tried VirtualBox to simulate distributed system ( 8-32 nodes) on
Ubuntu ? For me performance is secondary, correctness and application
development is first priority.

Can someone suggest best way to do ? There seems to be too many
Virtualization Software,
which one have low memory footprint which should allow 8-32 nodes on my 8 GB
RAM machine.
