If he is running Windows, you can have him turn on RDP[1] and then use:
Applications|Internet|Terminal Server Client[2]. He can tell you his IP
by http://whatsmyip.org/ (or trace as you've already done).

Alternately, you can have him install UltraVNC (http://www.uvnc.com/)
and then use the VNC option in Terminal Server Client instead of RDP.
It's opensource and free; it's also what I install for most of my
windows customers.
