Hi Charlie

I have an Aspire One.  Check out the
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne community docs.  I'm still
running 8.04 lts for other reasons, and can tell you that it has sound
issues as well.

You may want to consider easy peasy http://www.geteasypeasy.com/ - I
have not yet tried it, but it may be a better solution, and is based
on 8.10

Google has tons of info on these machines.
