sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
will ask you all the keyboard questions and (i think) a few about your
monitor. It's got substantially simpler since X started relying more on
HAL and less on xorg.conf.
In case you do manage to get it more wrong than it is now, it backs up
your xorg.conf for you.
