Yup, I run the 6.7 series from /opt. I created a netbeans group and 
installed it with that after creating /opt/netbeans and giving it 
appropriate permissions.

How it'll work for you will depend on what you use and how you use it.

~/.netbeans is created and contains your user config, but the installed 
environments are installed into /opt/netbeans. (I also run jruby HEAD 
locally and configure that )

I don't know that much about it as it "just works"; your use case might 
be different.
