Nope. The "alternate" CD installs the same system as the Live CD. Only
the installer itself is different (being text based, it uses less
RAM thus allows one to install Ubuntu on a not so modern machine)
It is the "SERVER" version, which indeed comes with no GUI, as you
would expect. But the "alternate" will install Gnome just like the Live
CD does. So Gnome fails to start after installing the alternate CD,
this is a problem that needs fixing/investigating. Adding
redondant desktop environments is not going to fix the underlying
problem I think ! ;-)
