The other advise from Brian and Karl will get you the updates, now you
need to troubleshoot why your update manager is crashing.

*** Nothing happened with either suggestion ***

1. Look in /var/crash and see if there are any crash reports.

*** How do I do that? ***

2. Start update manager from the terminal & post the output from the
terminal after each command:

$ update-manager

Now try it with gksu:

$ gksu update-manager

On this one you should first get a prompt for your password before
update-manager opens.
*** Yes it asked but then flashed on and off ***

*** This is what happened:

roger at roger-desktop:~$ update-manager
bash: $: command not found
roger at roger-desktop:~$ gksu update-manager
bash: $: command not found

*** Screen Flashed with update screen but immediately vanished. ***
