problem in netgear router

We need more info I think.  Which version of Ubuntu?  Are you using
Network Manger? Wicd? The /etc/networking scripts?

Also, perhaps a little ascii art diagram would help - I'm having
trouble following your description.

I think you are saying

Computer -> Netgear Router -> modem from ISP     doesn't work, but
Computer -> modem from ISP does work.

Is the ISP provided connection DSL using PPPoE or Cable connection
using DHCP or ?  I am not familiar with what's typical in your
location.

If the router connects fine, then what settings are you using on your
laptop to view the router's configuration?
When you are connected to the router, please type in a terminal the following

/sbin/ifconfig
ping -c 1 www.google.com

and post the output of that in your reply.
