@John: I would also ask for the output of:

$ sudo ifconfig
$ sudo lshw -C network
$ apt-cache policy network-manager
$ /etc/lsb-release

Note: on 'sudo lshw -C network' it's not necessary to post the full
output if you have lots of entries, just advise if you can see other
wireless networks around you from the output.
