Oops, shot myself :( session ends after <10s

update:

I can almost work as before except for gnome-terminal refusing to
start - as long as I don't close the error popup.  On the second
screenshot it's rolled up to conveniently hide host names<g>,
as soon as I click OK, I'm logged out.
