starting ssh tunnels

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was curious on a related topic. 

The cat's meow for X users would be a terminal emulator that upon login would
open multiple terminal windows, each with multiple tabs, each tab would have
its own configuration and .bash_history, including launching aribitary
commands automagically, eg "ssh somehost.com". The old multi-gnome terminal
could do this years ago, but I am not aware of one with this level of
configuration today. Anybody know anything like this?
