problem with hostname

kappa01@:~$ cat /etc/hostname
wlsdev18-2
kappa01@:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 wlsdev18-2
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
As you can see, the system prompt does not include the hostname wlsdev18-2, thus my consternation especially since I did not knowingly make a change.
Also, I am running standard 9.04 but with kubuntu rather than gnome.

Please bottom post on this list; see

more information.
So, I'll assume that you are running standard Ubuntu (Gnome) 9.04. Can
you please post the *actual* hostnames that you are using without
obuscating?
$ cat /etc/hosts
$ cat /etc/hostname
I'm wondering if perhaps you special characters in the hostname that is
causing the issue.
