problem with hostname

k.  In a terminal type the following command.

sudo gedit /etc/hostname

enter your password and a graphical editor comes up.  delete all that is
there AND then type whatever you want to name your computer without the
angle brackets:

froller at metis:~$ hostname 
metis

Save the file and close.  You may need to restart (or restart the
network) for the change to take affect.  IF this does not fix the issue
then check your environment variables.
