problem with hostname

To what? 

<username> @(none):~$ cat /etc/hostname 
<hostn ame> 
<username>@(none):~$ 

and still <hostname> is not retained thru reboot.

Using whatever editor your comfortable with edit /etc/hostname as root: 
sudo vi /etc/hostname
