Until you figure out the problem, you can create a new panel item (I'd
generally recommend a desktop icon/item, but that wouldn't help much in
this case) for 'nautilus'). Right click a blank spot on the panel you
choose and click 'Add to panel'. Once opened, select 'Custom Application
Launcher'|Add -
Type: Application
Name: <Nautilus>
Command: /usr/bin/nautilus
That way, when your icons are not showing up, you can single click the
Nautilus icon on the panel bring them up.
As a side note: I have been struggling with a similar issue on a single
machine; on occassion my gnome-panel applets won't load properly, so
I've had to create a 'killall gnome-panel' icon on the desktop to get
the panels to reload the icons. I'm pretty sure that this is caused by a
bonobo race condition, but so far I've not been able to pin down the cause.
