No issues with the VB 3.0 & the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM) nic.
In fact everything is working just fine; networking, usb, sound (even
via pulseaudio out to the speakers on my other machine).

I'll test using the PCnet-FAST III to see if I can reproduce your problem.
