You should definitely not replace your working system with Karmic to
test the bug. Rather, install in a spare partition and take care not
to format your working partitions.

Of course, this assumes that you have a spare partition to test in. I
leave one on most machines that I configure (5 gigs) but most people
do not. So while the developer was right in asking you to check in the
latest version (there has been a lot of work on that driver recently,
though I do not know how much of it trickled down to Karmic yet), you
might not have any practical way of doing so.
