strange highlighting problem

I am editing two 180K files, each containing the same information, but
arranged in a different order.  I am changing lines in the second
file and then copying and pasting them to the
first, and deleting the original line in that file.

Both files start off fully highlighted, but after a while the
highlighting in the first file stops (see attached png). Trying to
update the highlighting does nothing except remove all the highlighting.

Has anyone else seen this?
