Precisely - it's the false sense of security that annoys me.  Actually, the 
false sense of _insecurity_ too - the last time I had a machine actually 
open a file with a virus was Windows NT 4, and McAfee actually caught it - 
then sent an email to the IT guys, who phoned me and ordered me off the 
network until they could disinfect my machine!  Pointing out to them that 
the machine hadn't been infected, because the AV software actually worked 
was useless, and they were scratching their heads afterwards, because they 
couldn't find anything on my machine.
