Antivirus *doesn't solve the problem*. It's a stopgap measure that 
leaves you playing cat and mouse.

It's another tool.

It's also another vector for infection that can be targeted by malware.

It's also not a solution that you can sit back and rest on, since I've 
yet to hear of AV that detects 100% of signatures out there, and if you 
run multiple AV you eat up resources and risk interference with each 
other, and I've had far MORE problems with AV's that corrupt or goof a 
system up under Windows than I've had malware do damage.

Those are just some considerations.
