Waking up the printer makers to the existence of ubuntu and other linux users

That's not true.  See

for an immediate example.

The best bet is to check http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting
before purchasing.  Then, when you buy a compatible printer, tell the
manufacturer that you did so because of GNU/Linux support.
