    I have a slightly older CQ-50 laptop and you are meeting the same 
problem I solved. It happens that the new video hardware needs the 
driver in the Ubuntu 8.11 software to work. Get the 8.11 LiveCD and it 
will let you load it and it should run fine. Mine is very good.
