Can't get resolution higher than 640x480 after playing Frets on Fire

With nvidia-settings I was also only able to choose resolutions up to
1024x786, and when I manually chose 1440x900 I had to scroll to see my
whole desktop.

Adjusting my xorg.conf didn't do any changes to the display.
But when I rebooted my pc last week, the resolution was 1440x900 and
now everything is fine. I can not understand why a reinstall didn't
fix the resolution, but a reboot a few days later did. So I am still
very confused, but also happy it works fine now.
