Yes and no. For example, Via Unichrome II (CX700) chipset that I have in this Cloudbook. LiveCD just went blank without human manually choose Safe Graphics option. So yes, that Safe Graphics option will use VESA, and no, it won't automagically change to Safe Graphics.

Oh, by the way, I'm using openchrome driver in this Cloudbook. VIA driver I downloaded from viaarena.com somehow didn't work, I think because poorly-designed driver installer.

Nope, just driver went wrong. For example some Intel graphics chipsets works fine and correctly identified by LiveCD. No such luck with VIA and some SiS.
