Under very similar conditions:
 -default start (not touching the keyboard) was Ubuntu.
 -no access to my old XP OS.
.... I could boot XP by selecting (on Ubuntu CD,
 from the menu presented):
 -- Boot from first Harddisk.

Easy to try, if your Ubuntu (or XP-CD, I forgot) has
 a menu showing it.
Of course it requires that XP is on your first harddrive.
 Often it is.


Not all Ubuntu install-CDs have this menu.
 I forgot what version it was. 6.06LTS probably.
 (maybe you still have an old Ubuntu CD ?)

I used that option till my next Ubuntu install.
 (that install went by the book, convenient set-up)
