In Kompozer's case it's the known incompatibility with the Gtk
libraries that I noted above in the this thread.  The 0.8 alpha
versions are stable on Ubuntu 8.10 even though they're alpha.  I've
not managed to crash my one even doing really complicated table
building. 

The installation is easy and won't mess anything up as it's just a
matter of unpacking the tar file and running the executable, it
doesn't spread itself all over your system or require any extra
libraries. 

I'm pretty sure the link to the alpha has been posted here already.
