Vlc won't play DVD's on Ubuntu, or Kubuntu Intrepid

I've a lot of experience of compiling packages from source tarballs, but have
no experience of downloading a src package from a distros repo, vlc for
Jaunty for example, and then compiling it for use on Intrepid.
Any pointers on how to procede with that, or perhaps a link to a HOWTO would
be welcome. I am willing to give it a go, as long as I don't trash my current
Ubuntu Intrepid install in the process
