Your xorg.conf is pretty much the same as mine, apart from the vesa driver
being installed, rather than the ati one, although my graphics card is an ati
one.

I see that Jaunty is using vlc 0.9.8a, which may well resolve the problem, but
dependency hell needs to download 61.8MB of archives, so as to install the
Jaunty version of vlc. Logically it would use less bandwidth to just install
the Hardy version of vlc which has no deps, and I know that works. I don't
want to end up with a mix and match of both Intrepid, and Jaunty packages on
my Ubuntu Intrepid install. If it had just been the vlc packages, then no
problem.

Be that as it may, I might install another instance of Ubuntu Intrepid, as I
have loads of harddrive space, and see what installing the Jaunty vlc, with
all the deps does. it would be nice to see if Jaunty's vlc actually does work
on my Intrepid install with my hardware. At the moment I'm downloading CD
iso's for Fedora 10 on dialup, so it may well be a few days before I can try
that out.

See below for all the deps that need to be installed on Intrepid, so as to
install Jaunty's vlc.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc: Depends: vlc-nox (= 0.9.8a-1ubuntu2) but it is not going to be
installed
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.8) but 2.8~20080505-0ubuntu8 is to be installed
