Nice, so it was not the culprit for once :)

My xorg.conf is extremely boring:
---------------
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
--------------
It's the default for the "ati" driver. Note, however, that I upgraded to
Jaunty on the weekend. I don#t think that xorg.conf has changed, but who
knows.

I believe that the particular vlc in Intrepid has issues on some
hardware (cf. the link I googled a few days ago).

You might want to try the vlc from Jaunty to see whether it fixes the
issue. Otherwise please do file a bug report at Launchpad (and include
info about your sound and graphics hardware as per
