Sound no longer works

Hello,

For reasons not yet known, sound is no longer functioning. I am currently working with 8.04 and clicking on the sound icon gets the following message:

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."

Anybody have any ideas on what I should be looking at or for?
