I agree it's somewhat tedious (how tedious depends how much the profile
has changed from default), but it's not difficult.

No, I didn't say that, and it's incorrect. The fact that moving
~/.mozilla worked indicates the problem was specific to the old profile.
Clearly, the new profile works and the old doesn't. Thus, the only
task is the figure out what in the old profile was causing the problem.
That way the OP can get back as many features of the old profile as
possible.
