(bit)torrent is a network protocol for sharing files.

It is specifically designed to distribute the load from one central server
(typical http or ftp) to several equal (or peer) clients. As soon as a
client has downloaded one part of a file, it will start sharing that part
with other peers. If there are enough peers, they can exchange various
parts of the file and some peers don't even need to contact the original
"seeder" of the file.
