TNEF message

I use Ubuntu 8.10, default setup.

I received a message with :
TNEF message attachment (winmail.dat)

I saved the file. (I cannot display it)

The saved file winmail.dat .... according to 'Properties' is:
TNEF message (application/vnd.ms-tnef)

Question 1: Can I open the file somehow? (in Ubuntu)

Question 2: Is there a polite message? Saying:
I use Linux. I cannot read the file. Please use a publicly-known format.
 (or something like that)
 (I lack the knowledge to make a factual-correct answer.)
