Ubuntu 9.10 defaults to GRUB 2 which doesn't use "menu.lst". You will 
probably find a file, "grub.conf" in your /boot/grub directory: this is 
the replacement and follows a similar, but not interchangeable, format. 
You should note that this file *should not* be directly edited: instead 
the scripts that are used in its generation provide the means to 
customise your configuration. These are "grub" in /etc/default and 
"00_header" and its siblings in /etc/grub.d.
