That depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to mostly run 
specific Windows applications it wouldn't be useful to use Ubuntu. But 
if you want to use the machine e.g. for browsing the web and email, 
Ubuntu may be better. Anyway, why don't you just try it? Download the 
Ubuntu live CD and check if it is good for you. You can even install it 
within Windows. Then it is easy to remove if you decide after some time 
that Ubuntu isn't the right thing for you.
