How do I detect that a jump drive is mounted?

I've written a file on the jump drive and check for its existence before
I do the backup. But I had a problem a while back and wrote the file to
disk without having the jump drive mounted. I backed up for a couple of
weeks before I discovered that the jump drive wasn't mounted. I would
have thought that this was a fairly common question but maybe I'm
missing something and not asking the right question.
Can you explain the dedicated mount point in some detail?
Thanks very much,
