[ubuntu-users] Double Trouble with GRUB

Please retain the square brackets because I get a lot of email and won't
find your reply if you don't include the square brackets as in
[ubuntu-users].

I have had problems booting up. I thought I only had one problem -- the
power supply. But now I am convinced there are 2 separate and unrelated
problems. The second problem is GRUB and it is that problem I want to
concentrate on. The bottom line is as follows: The computer is dual
core and is set up with dual boot. The two dual boot systems are XP and
Ubuntu and I rarely use the XP machine. There are several hard drives
that are NTFS format, one hard drive I reformatted as EXT3 and one that
has 3 partitions one of which is formatted as EXT3 and is used as the
Ubuntu Linux "/" root system.. When I installed Ubuntu, GRUB was also
installed and configured. I looked at GRUB (attached below) and
expected to see a reference to a "sd" type hard drive (all the hard
drives are "sdxx" and you can see this by looking at the System Monitor
and the Mount command as well as the "fstab" file. Copies of all 3 are
attached but the System Monitor is a screen picture and I also included
a type "xcf" file which you can view with "gimp".

I don't want to mess Ubuntu up because most of the time it boots up to
"/" (root system) and does not complain. When it does not boot up
properly it seems to be trying to boot on "hda". Ubuntu seems to be
booting from the "fstab" file definitions and not from GRUB. I cannot
figure any other explanation as there do not seem to be any references
in GRUB.which reference "sd" hard drives..

Hope someone knowledgeable about GRUB can explain this behavior and tell
me what needs to be changed in GRUB so that GRUB is doing what it
should be doing..

Sorry for all the detail but I think it is necessary if someone wants to
help me on this problem.

Thanks - Ted Hilts
