Unfortunately, compiz does not support multiple desktops as you used to
know them (which is why I gave up on using it for myself). The pager
app now lets you focus on different panes, but the backend is radically
different from the old desktop paradigm. When you start a new
application, it should open in the same screen as you are current
focused on. Applications can be moved around by right-clicking on title
bar and specify to move right/left or down/up.
If you want to drag windows around like we used to do in the pager, you
have to zoom the view out, (I think the default key combo is Window-E.)
I don't remember if I had to enable this key combo in the compiz
configuration manager, but this would zoom my desktop right out into
something that looked like a giant pager, and I could move windows
around to my leisure.
In the end, I've come to the conclusion that compiz only servers to add
eye candy at the cost of reduced functionality.
