please see this page:

There's a download there for a .ppd printer driver for this model
printer. There were also reports on that page of the printer being
correctly recognized/installed with ubuntu by default (i.e. no
fiddling). If this hasnt happened for you, then I suggest you do the
following:
1. Download the .ppd from the site I linked above
2. Save it someplace where you won't delete it... i.e.
under /usr/share/ppd if you want it to be available or all users
(i'd put it
under /user/share/ppd/brother/<name_of_the_driver>.ppd) note:
you will need root permissions to put it there. For example: if
you downloaded it to your desktop, copy-paste this into a
terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal):
sudo
mv /home/`whoami`/Desktop/<name_of_downloaded_file>.ppd
/usr/share/ppd/<name_of_downloaded_file>.ppd
(The above command should all be on the same line...i.e.
all grouped together, don't hit enter till the very very
end)
3. Go to "System > Administration > Printing", If your printer is
listed there then "R-Click > Properties > Settings > Make and
Model : [Change] > Provide PPD file"
4. Navigate to the location where you put the downloaded ppd file
(in the above case, it would be located
at /usr/share/ppd/<name_of_downloaded_file>.ppd)
5. Click 'Forward' then 'Finish' I believe.
6. Try the printer again (i.e. print a test page)
Hopefully that should be all you need to do.

No problem, and welcome!
