Ubuntu Laptop upload ?

Hi I'm having trouble getting a Ubuntu laptop set up--New from Dell.  In my last talk with them, they have asked me (as I understand it)  to download  U ver 9.xx  to a flash drive and be ready to upload it into the Mini-9 laptop.  

>From the download web site, it looks like ver 9 is for desktops, and the download is for cd delivery, via ?Roxio? or equivalent.
Is there an opinion that this is the wrong version for a laptop and that a flash drive is not going to deliver the upload into the laptop?  

In the short run, I'm inclined to give Dell some leeway, but I wonder how much time to spend in this direction.  
Advise? Opinions?
