Problem with apt on a virtual machine

I am using kvm/qemu for virtualization (I have had trouble getting 
virtualbox to work from the command line).  No I can't access the internet 
from the virtual machine.  Running ifconfig on the virtual machine gives 
an address for eth0 as 10.0.2.15.
