It sometimes is necessary, and people do it all the time. Personally, I
keep desktop effects disabled on my desktop computer to preserve
performance for my games (and to keep videos/graphics from
stuttering...damn ATI)
On my laptops (one w/ nvidia graphics, one intel graphics) this isnt
necessary because of the better drivers for the graphics cards, so I
keep desktop effects enabled (yes, at the expense of some battery life).
Since I travel with those, I like them to be a little more flashy than
normal...just to show up all the stuck-up win-zealots at my school how
pathetic vista's effects really are (and I still get better battery life
than them :D ).
